Head down and moving forward…

Ah yes the bill….

We had hired this moving company to pack, load and store most of our belongings for the past year while we decided where our next longer term residence would be.  In all fairness to them, they did a good job, gave a good rate for storage and for re-loading the stuff.

The comment was made however that they would have given us a great deal on the move to the island.  Only a mere $9,500 give or take without the ferry fares and waiting time.  Not such a great deal.

The drive begins….

Loaded and bill paid I was off.  It was now 5:00 pm, weekend traffic had started and I needed a few hundred dollars in fuel and a way out of town.  Okanagan traffic in the summer is killer.

Heading north towards Kamloops with a fond adieu from one of the moving company employees wishing me well and telling me there was no way “on God’s green earth” that I would make the last ferry to Nanaimo.  Not with that load on.

It didn’t matter as I was prepared, along with my newly found suitcase in hand, to sleep under the truck or in the truck at the ferry terminal to catch the 5:15 am ferry the next morning.  I had arranged for Tracy and some family members to start unloading the truck at 9:00 am the next morning.

Full tank and off we go….all 50′ of us.

It was a beautiful evening for driving…here  I’m climbing Highway 5 south out of Kamloops

My one and only pit stop at one of our favourite scenic truck stops on Hwy 5

Sunset and bugs on the windscreen just outside Abbottsford…

Arriving to a warm evening on the Vancouver/Tsawwassen waterfront ferry terminal at 10:25 p.m. I ambled up to the toll booth expecting the usual “we don’t know if we can fit you on” speech.

That will be $282 please and take lane 29.  She’s carrying a lot of large cargo on this last run and we don’t know if we can fit you on this sailing but you can wait on the lot for the 5:15 am  sailing in the morning if you would like (ah – BC Ferries never lets me down with their speeches)

…but wait, could it be…Yes!! I was the last truck on the ferry….wahoo!!

and so 7 am is gonna come soon enough but at least on the right side of the Georgia Strait….supper time!
